I knew little about Peterborough until I came to draw it and I was amazed at how rich it is in architectural gems! The centre piece is Peterborough Cathedral, one of England's finest examples of ecclesiastical, gothic architecture... lots of sky-high spires, endless arches and magnificent stone carvings. I also love the pretty Guildhall, standing proud at the other end of Cathedral Square.
The art deco Lido and 17th century Old Customs House are beautiful in their simplicity. I included the old Whitworth's flour mill in my drawing too as I love industrial architecture, which is just as much part of Peterborough's heritage as its cathedral. This wonderful city in the east of England is surrounded by fields and woods, rivers and nature parks, all that help paint the picture of Peterborough as an urban oasis, verdant in vernacular architecture as much as the ecclesiastical gems it is known for.
