Leamington Spa was recently voted as the happiest place to live in Britain! I have a tendency to fall a little in love with every place I draw, as I discover their nice little nooks and cultural crannies, things that make a place unique and endearing but are not necessarily well known, even to its native folk. I recently had a rendezvous at its Art Deco train station and the austere but imposing building naturally makes an appearance in my Cityscape. Leamington Spa benefits from its natural healing, thermal waters, which in itself could be the reason why so many people are delighted to live there. Its’ architectural splendour is a joy to behold and so I am not surprised by its success in the happy poll. The River Leam that runs through the heart of the town is quintessentially English. I drew it with people splashing about having fun in the water and lovers meeting on Mill Bridge. The one thing that captured my heart about Leamington Spa however is the story of the Three Graces. In the 1900s, a circus family lived in Leamington with their three elephants who they took for a daily walk to bathe in the waters of the River Leam. Wilhemina, Haddie and Trilby all make an appearance in my Cityscape of Leamington Spa and as such the three beautiful elephants helped me to create a celebration of their lovely town.
