Sunderland Postcard

JG110130

Sunderland is a proud, industrial port on the north east coast of England. It was once home to the world's biggest shipbuilding docks, together with being famous for coal mining, pottery making and glassware. Sunderland folk don't stand idle! Today, the Nissan car plant is the biggest employer but my illustration of Sunderland pays homage to industries past and present, together with a very industrious literary genius: Lewis Carroll, who is connected to the city.

The River Wear winds itself around the city, heading into the Sunderland docklands and the North Sea upon which grey seals and fishing boats bob around and two, very striking lighthouses, shine their beams across the ocean. Civic, Victorian architecture is present in the Sunderland Museum, which has been thrust into the 21st Century by its glass clad Winter Gardens. A black cat, symbol of the local football team, looks up towards the neo-classical Penshaw Monument, a Greek inspired oddity on a northern slope but then Sunderland is a city full of surprises!

Julia's vision of Sunderland makes a cute and collectable postcard and is also available as a beautiful Art Print for your home.
