When I drew Suffolk I realised in horror that it's the only county in England that I've never visited. Well we're going to have to put that right soon! As I've got to know Suffolk through my artwork I've come to see what a beautiful pocket of the world it is.

I love the medieval buildings with their wooden beams and red tiles or thatched roofs as at the lovely Lavenham. There are castles (Framingham) and cathedrals (Bury St Edmunds) that mark their presence on this relatively flat land, but it's the windmills, lighthouses and piers that give Suffolk its unique charm and character.

The beautiful seaside towns of Aldeburgh and Southwold look lovely with their lighthouses and pretty little cottages. Suffolk isn't all sweetness and light however and I like to include oddities and uncomfortably ugly architecture too, such as the Sizewell nuclear plant and port at Felixstowe. But Suffolk is overwhelmingly a place of understated beauty and one that I am keen to not let escape me for much longer.

P.S. I went for a long weekend in Suffolk in September 2020 and loved it! :-)
