In late 2018 I took a trip to the Pacific North West after having done a design of Oregon and Washington states. During the trip I headed to Portland which is home to one of my stockists: the iconic Powells Books, which is hereby featured in my illustration. I fell in love in Portland... with a city that's peaceful and liberal. I love that Portland's motto is to "Keep Portland Weird" and I admire the broad minded and free spirited thinkers of this wonderful city. Home to coffee culture, I enjoyed the local brews as I explored the city, through one of its walking tours. As such, some of the things I've included in my illustration of Portland come from that little tour.

I discovered that a philanthropic industrialist in the 19th Century insisted that no man or beast would go thirsty, which is why there are lots of pretty, little fountains dotted around the pavements. I love the food carts and enjoyed a falafel wrap at one of them, stood on the street munching away at a freshly prepared meal that sustained me all day. :-)

Most of all, I am in awe at the industrial masterpieces that are the many bridges that span the Willamette River. My favourite are the ones with the little towers, like houses sitting on a river. All hail Portland, the City of Roses... until we meet again. :-)
