Northampton Postcard

JG119530

As the biggest town in Britain, Northampton may sit humbly on the banks of the River Nene but has the character of a city with a wide cultural offering. I love the light ochre coloured buildings, built from Northamptonshire's iconic stone, of which there are many in my illustration. The Guildhall stands out for its amazing neo-gothic detailing but I also love the utilitarian style of the Central Library and the Museum and Art Gallery. Favourite however must be the Barratt Shoe Factory, which is a nod to Northampton's industrial past as one of the world's most prolific producers of shoes and boots. I have featured a selection of footwear in my illustration of Northampton including a pair of red, high heeled boots.

In the late 1990s I was part of a fashion trade delegation to Oslo, in search of expanding my international fashion brand. Times had suddenly become difficult for many British fashion business, triggered by the introduction of the Euro and with that, international fashion buyers changing their focus away from Britain and towards the EU market. At a very quiet trade event I got talking to a fellow business owner, a shoe maker whose brand, like mine, was struggling in the changing economic climate. We shared our concerns and dreams as to how we could evolve our respective business and find new markets. I talked about lingerie. He talked about boots for drag queens and trannies. We both went away and made our dreams a reality. I opened a lingerie shop and he became the originator and story behind Kinky Boots. The rest is history! :-)
