North Carolina Postcard

The state of North Carolina rolls down from the beautiful and vast Appalachian mountains in the west to the Atlantic Coast in the east. In my State Scape of North Carolina, people hike through the mountainous terrain, over gorges and waterfalls and camper vans trundle along the Blue Ridge Parkway and towards the quaint, historic settlement of Old Salem. The charming Biltmore Estate sits at the foot of the Great Smoky Mountains and the cities of Durham, Raleigh and High Point form the Research Triangle. 

I love learning facts about places I draw and including the state symbols, which help to reinforce its unique identity. My illustration of North Carolina therefore includes the red cardinal bird and the honey bee as well as the dogwood flower. I can see why birds and bees would want to settle down in The Tar Heel State, which is full of beauty and splendour from mountain to coast.
