Durham's skyline is dominated by its amazing cathedral. An amazing structure and one of Britain's more revered ecclesiastical architectural achievements. Durham Castle is also an important part of the city and skyline and I've actually stayed there one night many years ago when I took part in a political debate at the university! It's the one and only time that I've slept in a castle (not that I got much sleep... it was freezing and as the only guest I was a little scared!). Ardent students make their way across the Palace Green, no doubt hurrying along to a lecture. Durham University has some amazing buildings. I've added some students rowing along the River Wear and another is punting with his girlfriend under one of the many bridges that cross the river. Durham has many cultural riches, including the Oriental Museum, Gala Theatre and the delightful Botanic Garden, all of which I've featured on my portrait of the city.
