Brecon Beacons and Hay-on-Wye Postcard
I was enchanted by the lovely, literary town on the Welsh English border, that is the one and only, Hay-on-Wye! Known for its annual literature festival that draws people from around the world, the town is jammed full of bookshops, with floor to ceiling books. I spent many an hour wandering through the gift shops and bookshops in this delightful town, coming back with an armful. A castle looks down onto the town and the Hay Buttermarket, an ancient stone gathering place for sheep, cattle and farmers. Heading home, I drove through the stunning landscape of the Black Mountains within which lies the Brecon Beacons National Park. I walked up the pretty but steep incline of Sugar Loaf Mountain, passing Welsh ponies and sheep on route. The mountain overlooked the old mining town of Abergavenny, and I included a coal pit head even though the industry has long gone. In my illustration of the Brecon Beacons and Hay-on-Wye, a red kite soars ahead, pretty villages fringe the bracken and tree clad mountains and the River Wye and Usk meander through the green valleys. Come visit!
