I am at peace by water, especially lakes. I spent a few days in a cabin my a lake last year and the wildlife and stillness restores my energies and feeds my soul.
Last year I created an illustration of Lake Como for the Grand Hotel Victoria. Yes the lake is this shade of blue! In two days I head off on a big camper van trip and we will drive by Lake Como so will call in for a café or more on my travels.
Lakes are Lochs in Scotland and of course, the most famous is Loch Ness on account of its mysterious monster: Nessie. Here she is, in my illustration of the lake, popping up to welcome visitors to the loch and its environs. Loch Ness is very deep … 126 fathoms deep. The Jacobite Queen cruise liner, that commissioned this illustration is bobbing across its deep and dark waters on the lookout for the monster or maybe the odd stag roaming the glens, of which there are several in my illustration of Loch Ness.
Minnesota is known as the “Land of a Thousand Lakes”. I haven’t been there but as there are a thousand of them, I think I should go as I love being by lakes, swimming in them and chilling by them. I would be spoilt for choice! I think I would head for Longville. Because, there I would find Woman Lake. The perfect place to start
Toronto must be one of the most stunning, lakeside cities. It’s a place that I have visited many times and love Toronto Island where I swam and sunbathed one hot summer’s day. Oh here I am, in my illustration of Toronto, dipping in the bright blue water of Lake Ontario, with my beloved!
Let’s not forget The Lake District, one of the most stunning, and wet, regions of England. Mountains rise out of endless lakes, and I have happy memories spent in this area as a child. It’s on my campervan list to return, and it’s so long overdue. In the meantime, I will have to be content with nibbling on Kendal Mint Cake, which hails from this region, until I can hike these wondrous hills again one day. When I do, I’ll make sure to visit some of the amazing heritage buildings in the area too, many of which feature in my illustration of the Lake District.
