Looking beyond the tourist offer however I can see a beautiful, natural landscape, which local people farm and upon which ancient white villages lie. Landing in \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eIceland\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e in the middle of the night with an ice storm blowing wasn't part of my plan but I decided to embrace it with an open mind and heart and so when daylight broke I set out to discover Reykjavik. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWith the help of fellow passengers from Canada I gingerly made my way over black ice and snow mountains into the capital. The winter sun shone and lit up the town in all its splendour and gave us some much welcome Vitamin D. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe stunning Hallsgrimskyrkja church was like a beacon and the architectural wonder of the Harpa Concert Hall was a joy to discover. Visiting a place that I've drawn is always a pleasure but a frustration too as I get to see the lie of the land and want to go back to the drawing board and create from experience and not just google earth, and so I did. Everything oozes Gallic charm, including the pretty, little villages on the island such as Ste Francois, Ste Laurent and St Jean. Quaint little churches with steeples pointing high in the sky represent the villages and farms and vineyards producing an abundance of fruit and wine, occupy much of the rest of the island. The island sits at the bottom of the Montmorency Falls where Canadian wildlife roam through the thick, forested hills. I loved discovering this Mid-West American state, which is home to Chicago as well as Frank Lloyd Wright and Abe Lincoln. It is also the origin of the production line as epitomised by the motor car plant, which I have included in the top left of the State scape. The repetition in the car plant appears again, in the fields of corn, the mounds of coal and as such this design is very much about the imprint of mankind on the natural landscape. This makes the people strong and brave, as the battle of Culloden in 1746 proves. My Cityscape of \u003cstrong\u003eInverness\u003c\/strong\u003e therefore includes this famous battle between the Scots and the English. I've been to the site of the battle. It's a bleak and barren place, a vast, graveyard where many men lost their lives in the fight for their land and people. Fortunately that's behind us all now but the Scots still fight on for independence, which I think is fully understandable given Britain's obsession with Brexit. Politics aside, my portrait of \u003cstrong\u003eInverness\u003c\/strong\u003e reveals some beautiful and unique buildings such as Abertarf House and Balnain House. The River Ness flows down to the infamous Loch Ness by which a Scottish piper pipes his music, appreciated by a cultured Loch Ness Monster. Other wildlife join him in my landscape of \u003cstrong\u003eInverness\u003c\/strong\u003e, including a braying stag and a rather cute Highland Cow (Coo). The colours I chose for this design remind me of this region, ochre and terracotta set against a verdant green. On the way home, I camped again, this time at the right foot of \u003cstrong\u003eLake Como\u003c\/strong\u003e. The following day I enjoyed a boat trip across the lake and walked around one of the many, unbearably beautiful towns that fringe the water. Sadly, so did a staggering number of other tourists, many with Instagram crews to hand, cluttering up the tiny alleys. My love for the region and its food (favourites include local cheese and polenta are featured in this design) was not daunted. With Milan and Verona to the south, Trento to the east and Switzerland to the north, The \u003cstrong\u003eItalian Lakes\u003c\/strong\u003e is a culture vultures paradise and hikers’ heaven.
