It's often difficult to decide what to include and what to leave out when creating my map like illustrations, particularly in such a diverse and culturally rich region like \u003cstrong\u003eCalifornia\u003c\/strong\u003e. I am intrigued how each state of the USA has its own bird, flower, tree, insect and animal motifs. I have included some of them in my State Scapes as I believe they help to reinforce the individual identity of a place. Ornate and unique colleges that give an architectural nod and wink to Britain's medieval past appear more like fortresses than institutes of learning. My head almost pushed out of the plane's porthole window, desperate to see more of this charming place. I absolutely love drawing lighthouses. I love the beautiful confidence and cultural referencing in the Millennium Centre and the cute fortresses of Castel Coch and \u003cstrong\u003eCardiff\u003c\/strong\u003e Castle, which I remember visiting when I was an art student many years ago. Rugby is the national sport for Wales so it's only right that the Principality Stadium takes centre stage in my illustration of \u003cstrong\u003eCardiff\u003c\/strong\u003e, which also features a Welsh rugby player running enthusiastically with a ball. Each time I go I discover something new and also get to see it in the middle of winter and the heat of August and therefore appreciate the different wildlife that inhabit the Park at different times of the year too. The Romans were here, leaving the wall that surrounds the city, the Tudors left their mark with distinctive buildings such as the Guildhall, as did the Regents and the Victorians in their elegant and grand distinctive styles. In the 21st Century, the city still continues to develop and indeed the modernist Novium commissioned me to create this design of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eChichester\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e past and present. I didn't realise how breathtaking the landscape was (or how great the beer was) until I started discovering this land of both sky high mountains, grand canyons and desert sands through my work. The \u003c\/span\u003eRocky Mountains\u003cspan\u003e start their journey here in \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eColorado\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, scattered with fir trees, mountain goats and snow... lots of snow! \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eColorado\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e is therefore home to a major ski resort: \u003c\/span\u003eAspen and is therefore a big draw for lovers of the white stuff. Lots of major rivers run through the state, carrying the glacial water from the mountains to the valleys and cities below: Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. The Rio Grande\u003cspan\u003e begins its journey south here and with that, much needed water for the hotter, dryer states to the south of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eColorado\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e.  The airport of \u003c\/span\u003eDenver\u003cspan\u003e echoes the triangular shape of the mountains, which I think is super cute so I've included it in my design. I have discovered that \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eColorado\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003cspan\u003e is home to some excellent breweries, presumably due to the plentiful supply of water as well as abundant grain crops from the farms in the east of the State. The state capitol of Hartford shines bright in my illustration of \u003cstrong\u003eConnecticut\u003c\/strong\u003e, looking more like a Venetian palace than a state seat of governance. I love every opportunity to draw lighthouses and \u003cstrong\u003eConnecticut\u003c\/strong\u003e indulges me with this quirky pastime... I can count six of the best dotted around the coastline at New Haven, Norwalk and New London. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNot surprisingly, wildlife feature strongly in my vision of \u003cstrong\u003eConnecticut\u003c\/strong\u003e and the state symbols of the brook trout, sperm whale, white oak tree, American robin and mountain laurel all make an appearance as does a rather snappy lobster. My vision of The \u003cstrong\u003eCotswolds\u003c\/strong\u003e includes many of its pretty English towns, built from the golden coloured Cotswold stone. Popular tourist spots such as Broadway and Burford, Chipping Campden and Cirencester feature in my artwork.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv class=\"product__intro xs-hidden\"\u003eCastles and Cathedrals (Sudeley and Cirencester) demonstrate the grand architecture of times past as do the prestigious stately home of Blenheim Palace. Ancient market towns and cities fringe this predominantly rural region, with a racecourse at Cheltenham in the west and grand, Regency architecture at Bath in the south. I wasn't disappointed... the city is full of hidden treasures, from the medieval architecture that still survives such as the Weaver's Cottage in Spon End to 21st Century sculptures such as the Whittle Arch, outside the \u003cstrong\u003eCoventry\u003c\/strong\u003e Transport Museum. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eTransport has been a big part of \u003cstrong\u003eCoventry's\u003c\/strong\u003e industrial history, home to the Jaguar Land Rover plant, of which three are just coming off the production line in my illustration. Lady Godiva is kept in good company by another local heroine and literary legend, George Eliot.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI loved discovering the \u003cstrong\u003eCoventry\u003c\/strong\u003e Music Museum together with the Herbert Art Gallery \u0026amp; Museum and realise that this is a city which would definitely make my cultural hit list.
